The engagement session is such an amazing time for you as a couple before the wedding day. If you're just starting to plan the wedding or right in the middle of vendor meetings and caketasting, it is an awesome excuse to dress up, have fun and be romantic. It is also a perfect time to feel familiar being in front of my camera. Think of it as a sweet date with a third wheeler, me! =)

Being anxious, or shy is a normal thing to feel at first. But as our session goes by you become more comfortable about showing who you both really are and how you feel for each other. And the truth is there is no right or wrong way to be you as a couple. You are a great team. Leave the photography to me and enjoy your time together!

You may have the following questions in mind.

How long will the session last?

The average engagement session lasts from thirty minutes to two hours. It just depends on what you are interested in doing. I am in no hurry. Additionally, lighting is best during the last few hours of the day, so I try to schedule the session during this time period whenever possible.

What should we wear?

Couples generally choose outfits that complement their own personal style. I want you to feel and look yourself. With that said, don't be afraid if you aren't matchy-matchy, but coordinate your outfits too. Accessories such as hats, scarves or watches are great, and layering is your best friend (especially for men). I would suggest avoiding clothes with large logos and busy patterns. Some may choose to have two outfits, one casual and one dressy. You should also know that close-ups of the hands are always taken.

Where should we have our session?

Great photographs can be taken anywhere. My general recommendation is to first consider a location that’s sentimental to the both of you. If you have a place that you two love to be in, (first date spot, favorite coffee shop, favorite things to do) bring me along! The list of engagement locations in Southern California are absolutely endless, and if you would like to explore more ideas, please send me a message. I thoroughly enjoy sessions that are purely inspired! Some areas may require a professional photography permit which varies in price. Don't worry, I can help arrange all of this. =)

What is the turn around time for engagement sessions?

I deliver photos 3-4 weeks after taking them. I will send you highlights and maybe even blog about it. =)

Here are some tips you and your partner can do to ease your worries about having an engagement session with me:

Tip #1 Wear comfortable shoes (or bring some).

Tip #2 Be on time. Not only does this make us all feel unrushed, but also because I am a natural light photographer. The sun is my light director, so I alway suggest photographing at certain times of the day to get the best possible light and in turn beautiful photos. Please plan for traffic, finding parking and makeup touch ups when the time comes for you to head to the engagement location.

Tip #3 Clothing that allows movement looks beautiful in photos. So ladies if you have your twirly skirts or “flowy” dresses, bust em’ out of the closet.

Tip #4 If you are hiring a makeup artist on your wedding day, set up a trial run on the day of your engagement session. This gives you the opportunity to get to know your make-up artist and look your best for the shoot.

Tip #5 Props can be a wonderful supplement to an engagement shoot when kept tasteful, minimal, and complementary to your personalities. Keeping props as simple as a favorite quilt or a loose handful of flowers can add visual interest to the session and inspiration for the photographer without taking away from your interaction.

Tip #6 Some couples love to include their furry friends! Pets are adorable and are always welcome in front of my camera =)

Tip #7 Lastly, relax and have fun. Treat this time as if you were going on a sweet, romantic date with each other. Prepare for lots of snuggles and kisses! Encourage each other by telling your partner they look hot, or sexy or gorgeous, or handsome or beautiful. Trust me, hearing it from you will make them feel more confident!

Now, let's take some beautiful photos together. =)
